Indulgence Can Be Harmful to Growing Puppies
Lessons about indulgence. The importance of balance in dog training.
I firmly believe that one of the most common unintentionally neglectful things that animal lovers do is constantly indulge or "spoil" their dogs. Spoiling results in rotting. There is a time and place to reward your dog or give affection- if people spend more time on discipline and less time on affection based activities, their dogs would not only be happier but healthier! Think this Beagle is cute? Look again. She is morbidly obese. She will probably end up with a number of health complications if she hasn't already. There is a saying "killing with kindness".
Here are some very common ways that people indulge their dogs that result in unwanted behavior.
"Just say hello and pet him and he will stop barking and jumping."
"Just give her some food off your plate and she will stop begging."
"Just let her go see the other dog and she will stop pulling on the leash."
"Just let him out of the crate and let him sleep with us so he stops whining."
This type of mentality brings out the worst in children and pets. If we don't teach them to ask for things politely, or regulate their emotions, or to earn anything what reason would they have to practice respectful, calm, polite behavior?
