AKC Fit Dog–Aligned Program
This program is designed for people who want to be intentional about how they spend time with their dog — and who understand that movement, structure, and shared experience are powerful tools.
Structured Pack Walks bring together people who value calm dogs, clear communication, and purposeful activity. It’s an opportunity to enjoy time with your dog, connect with others who have similar goals, and turn a simple walk into something that benefits both of you.
Through consistent, guided walks, dogs learn to move through the world with composure, engage more readily with their handler, and burn both physical and psychological energy in a healthy way.
At its core, this program reflects our broader philosophy: movement creates regulation, regulation builds clarity, and clarity strengthens the relationship between dog and handler.
What This Program Is
• A 12-week structured pack walk program
• Meet once per week for approximately 60 minutes
• Small, controlled groups — no drop-ins
• Rotating real-world locations throughout Hernando County
• Calm, parallel movement with clear expectations
• Progressive challenges layered week to week
This program teaches dogs how to regulate themselves in motion, and teaches handlers how to lead with clarity instead of constant correction.
What This Program Is Not
• Not a play group
• Not a dog socialization hour
• Not off-leash
• Not an obedience class
• Not appropriate for dogs who are unsafe walking around other dogs
If your dog needs freedom, this is not it.
If your dog needs structure, this is exactly that.
AKC Fit Dog — How This Fits
AKC Fit Dog is a participation-based recognition program that rewards consistent physical activity with your dog. Walking is an approved Fit Dog activity.
Time Requirements
Bronze Title
• 60 minutes per week for 12 consecutive weeks
Silver Title
• 90 minutes per week for 12 consecutive weeks
Gold Title
• 150 minutes per week for 12 consecutive weeks
Our weekly pack walk alone fully satisfies the Bronze requirement.
Participants who want to pursue Silver or Gold simply add additional walking on their own each week. Owners log their own minutes and submit paperwork directly to AKC.
This program provides the structure and consistency that most people struggle to maintain on their own.
What We Work On During Pack Walks
Each walk includes intentional, real-world challenges such as:
• Calm, steady walking pace
• Neutrality around other dogs and people
• Moving through new environments without escalation
• Navigating different surfaces and spaces
• Improving leash handling and handler consistency
• Ending the walk calmer than we started
Progression is built into the program. As the weeks go on, environments become more complex — not to overwhelm dogs, but to build capacity.
Locations
All walks take place within Hernando County and are chosen intentionally.
Locations include:
• Long, paved multi-use trails
• Nature preserves and lake loops
• Boardwalk and waterfront paths
• Urban sidewalks and plazas
• Climate-controlled indoor environments
Every location supports approximately one hour of continuous, purposeful movement.
Eligibility Requirements
This program is appropriate for dogs who:
• Can walk on leash around other dogs without lunging or explosive reactions
• Are physically able to walk for approximately one hour
• Can recover from mild environmental stress without escalating
Dogs who are not yet safe in a group setting should pursue private training first.
Structure works — but only when dogs are ready for it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this appropriate for reactive dogs?
This program is not designed for dogs who are actively reactive or unsafe in close proximity to other dogs. If your dog is struggling in public, private training is the correct starting point.
Will my dog earn an AKC title automatically?
No. This program aligns with AKC Fit Dog activity requirements, but owners are responsible for logging and submitting their own paperwork.
What if my dog needs breaks?
Breaks are built into pacing and structure, not stopping to disengage. Dogs learn regulation through movement, not avoidance.
What happens if we miss a week?
Consistency matters. Occasional absences happen, but repeated missed sessions undermine progress and Fit Dog tracking.
Is this obedience training?
No. This is movement-based regulation and leadership work. Many obedience issues improve as a result.
